2018-19

׳The Jerusalem Andalusian Orchestra׳

1. Season Concerts:

Istanbul

Turkish music with a special emphasis on the popular Arabesque style, to which Turkish star İbrahim Tatlises is most closely associated.
Participants: Sapir Saban, Mehmet Dash (Turkey), Omri Zelig (baglamas).

Dialna

The meaning of the word Dialna in Moroccan is ours, one of ours.

 

Thus, in this concert, a musical composition will be performed using African dialects of the Arabic language and Hebrew, both of which simultaneously continue the legacy of the rich North African culture and serve as an original Israeli creation.

 

Participants: Miri Mesika, Gusto, and Elad Levy (kamancheh).

Adio Kerida

New arrangements in the language of the orchestra, for the much-loved Ladino song, with a touch of the popular Spanish repertoire. An all-consuming love story.

Participants: Yasmin Levy and Yechiel Hasson (guitar).

Basbusa

An upbeat concert that is all about celebrating rhythm and joy! The best songs from the Arab world and Islam make their way to Israel, get translated into Hebrew, and become a central part of Israel’s soundtrack.
Participants: Sharif, Adva Omer, and Zivar Bahaloul (keyboards).

East West Israeli Opera Series—Season 3:

Africa

A performance of tribal beats and bewitching melodies from the Sahara.

Participants: Ravid Kahalani and Riff Cohen.

Athens-Jerusalem

A celebration of Greek Laïko music (a popular genre) with the legendary Greek artist, Dimitris Basis.

Participation: Dimitris Basis and Miri Mesika. 

Gibraltar

Gibraltar, Europe, Africa, Spain, Morocco, the oud and Flamenco meet on the Strait of Gibraltar.

Participants: Yehuda Shawki, Benjamin Bouzaglo, Fyty Carrillo (Spain)—guitar, Keren Pesach, and Sharon Saguy (Flamenco dancer).

Sarit Hadad Sings Zohar Argov

A collaborative performance comprising select pieces from the golden days of the Mizrahi singer, Zohar Argov, with special orchestral arrangements.

Participants: Sarit Hadad and Nati Ohana (drums).

2. Off-Season Notable Concerts:

The Concert of the Decade

The Jerusalem Orchestra East and West is celebrating its 10th year with its best arrangements and performances and a taste of the soloists who have performed for us over the years.

Participants: Ella Daniel, Neta Elkayam, Ravid Kahalani, Yehuda Shawki, Avner Gadassi, Nasreen Qadri, Knesiyat Hasechel, David Broza, Yasmin Levy, Sapir Saban, Emil Zrihan, Guy Mintus, (piano) and Ariel Bart (harmonica).

Kulna—Mekudeshet Festival

The massive Kulna festival, which brought the curtain down on the 2018 Mekudeshet festival, unfolded in Gan Mitchell on the seamline, opposite the Old City walls, in a place that lovers of Jerusalem from east and west meet. This is where we offered Jerusalem a unique musical tradition to enable us to celebrate the Middle East together.

Violet Salama, Muhammed Mugrabi, and Neta Weiner.

Arabesque Festival, Acre

The festival showcases a slew of voices—local artists and guests from abroad, who create a diverse range of music that bridges differences of opinion and conflicts while making space for fruitful discourse while compounding cultural layers that unite us through our shared roots.

Participants: Miri Mesika, Sarit Hadad, Sanaa Marahati (Morocco), Violet Salama and Ariel Bart (harmonica).
 

Original Morocco with Four Moroccan Soloists

An evening in which we all celebrate original Morocco with the best of the Maghreb and North African repertoires. From classical Andalusia music to the rhythmic chaabi—a must for lovers of the genre.

Participants: Anas Najar, Rashid El-Alami, and Dia Znibar.

Holocaust Remembrance Day at Yad Vashem

A special event to mark Holocaust Remembrance Day at Yad Vashem

Participants: Moshe Louk and Simon Cohen.

Piano Festival

Israeli, Middle East romanticism.

Participants: Avner Gadassi and Guy Mintus (piano).

One sound for Coexistance

The annual celebration of the Beit Berl Center for the Advancement of Shared Society.

Participants: Nasreen Qadri and Yehuda Saado.

Selichot in Safra Square

The traditional annual concert, erev Yom Kippur

Participants: Moshe Louk, Hanan Ben Ari, Yasmin Levy, and Orit Atar.

3. French Tour:

A series of performances as part of Israel-France cultural season marking a 70-year

relationship.

  • The Marseille National Theatre. Participants: Ella Daniel, Benjamin Bouzaglo, and Ariel Bart (harmonica).
  • The Grand Synagogue of Paris. Participants: Benjamin Bouzaglo, Ziv Yehezkel, and Moshe Louk.
  • Opéra de Nice / Théâtre de la Ville / Cathedral of Our Lady of Strasbourg. Participants: Mayu Shviro (cello) and Ariel Bart (harmonica).
