The Musico platform provides access to and the opportunity to learn many of the orchestra’s diverse compositions and to take the first steps on a fascinating musical journey with Tom Cohen and the orchestra.
Between East and West
In 2020, we filmed a concert without an audience, which we turned into a ten-part package that serves as an introduction to our musical DNA—
Two parts are about Jewish Moroccan music, two explore Spanish music (Flamenco and Ladino), one covers French music (from chanson to Raï), two cover Arabic music (Egyptian and Middle Eastern), one deals with Persian music, one covers music from the desert and last but not least, one that poses the question—what is Israeli music?
At the heart of each of the parts, is four to six musical compositions that were performed in the Henry Crown Theatre in the Jerusalem Theater by various soloists (Neta Elkayam, Yohai Cohen, Emil Zrihan, Elad Levy, Yehuda Shwekey, Sharon Saguy, Mor Karbasi, Ella Daniel, Riff Cohen, Ravid Kahalani, Berry Sakharof, Ziv Yehezkel, Riad Hamdi Mustafa, Liraz Charhi, Daniella Lugassy, Yossi Azulay, Ariel Bart, and Guy Mintus). All of the recordings are accompanied by instructions from our musical director, Maestro Tom Cohen, that offer guided listening while exploring pivotal personalities, musical genres and the unique instruments for each style. The concerts are filmed and mixed at the highest level, which ensures the best possible audio quality and the instructional components are accompanied by animation clips by illustrator, Moshe Kakon, which were prepared by the Dov Abramson studio in Jerusalem.
This series is one of the ways we deal with the limitations imposed by Covid while trying to open up to new audiences and introduce them to the art and cultural riches of underrepresented groups in Arab society and religious streams in Jewish society. This platform opens different sectors of the population up to these musical trends by translating them into different languages: English, French, and Arabic. The concert recordings enable the orchestra to take another step forward in the digital consumption of culture and to adapt to any restrictions that may or may not be imposed.
Worth Knowing
The Jerusalem Orchestra East West believes that an intrinsic part of its artistic endeavors is the conservation and distribution of knowledge. The goal is to create meaningful creative experiences that integrate this knowledge and expose the audience to historical riches. We believe that deeper understanding increases the connection to and enjoyment of artistic experiences.
In each new series we produce, ticket holders and subscribers receive a digital program comprising dozens of pages of historical and biographical details on a specific musical genre with information about the composers and the songs. Over the years, the orchestra has garnered a wealth of knowledge about classical North African and Middle Eastern music.
